Verdi and Puccini at The Grand

This November, Ellen Kent, with Opera and Ballet International, presents Madama Butterfly and Rigoletto at the Grand Theatre. These presentations also feature the Chisinau National Philharmonic as well as international guest soloists.

On Monday 3 November, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly tells the unfortunate story of a tragic couple brought together and dButterfly-003ivided by fate. The love story is told in operatic tradition and involves a beautiful young Japanese girl and her partner, an American naval lieutenant. Their relationship will be unfolded through the voice of opera and will feature songs such as the Humming Chorus, One Fine Day, and Love Duet. The scenery for Madama Butterfly is stunning and features a Japanese garden.  This production is enhanced by elaborate costumes from Japan, with antique wedding kimonos making an appearance. It promises to be a moving, sensational performance.

Rigoletto, on Tuesday 4 November, is also quite the tragedy.  Based on a story originally written by Victor Hugo, this story of Rigoletto, set in Italy, reveals the tragic tale of Gilda, a jester’s daughter whose heart is stolen by a somewhat untrustworthy ruler. Her love affair is thwarted and in the process Rigoletto brings on tragedy. The opera’s sets are opulent and displays of wealth are featured.  A Golden Eagle, which has a seven foot wingspan, is also a part of the cast in this production. This opera is famed and most celebrated for its tenor arias, La Donna e Mobile and Questa o Quella.
