High and Dry at the Sahara

This Friday at the ever atmospheric and graffiti painted Under Bar is a musical natural high with the promise of nothing but hypnotic beats, friends and solidarity as the bar for that night is dry. That’s right – no alcohol.

The organisers from Jobs, Friends and Houses are the protagonists who employ individuals on abstinent recovery to refocus their lives, by gaining training and paid work in a sometimes judgemental society.  JFH are a social enterprise led by a serving police officer with the official backing of Lancashire Constabulary. No directors are paid and all profits made are re-invested back into the mission – to support and sustain abstinent recovery.

On Friday the night becomes more and more special as Blackpool is treated to almost local DJ Woody, one of Britain’s most respected hip hop DJ’s and arguably one of the most innovative and musical turntablists of his generation. Responsible for the invention of a host of ground-breaking scratches and turntablist techniques including his famous signature ‘Woodpecker’ scratch, not many DJ’s can lay claim to having had US legend DJ Qbert on the telephone asking for tips. In 1999 Woody entered his first DJ competition and by 2001 Woody had become the worlds most successful scratch DJ by gaining more major championship titles than any of his contemporaries.

Support acts for the evening are house DJ Ed Mahon of Cowbell Radio and Louise Spiteri, vocalist. The night is sure to be bouncy and energetic with a hopeful audience of supporters of JFH but the music that will be enjoyed will be funk, rhythm and blues infused hip hop with soulful and story driven lyrics. Under Bar really does have an atmospheric draw. It’s friendly, they sell peanuts in pretty tea cups and hopefully they serve a mean coffee.

Advance tickets have sold out but there are full price tickets still available at £8.
