Back in November we saw urban art installation Homegrown set up shop in town. It featured local artists including Catch 22, Danzig, Robin Ross, Infected by Design, HeDreamtMars, Lowdown and TRI. Located in the heart of Blackpool’s town centre, at NWBaseline’s Victoria Street studio space, the installation was a huge success.
The opening night attracted close to 200 people wanting to get a preview of the artwork and pick up their very own piece to take home. The evening also included a bassy soundtrack from DJs Forthkind, Relic, Beach Club, Chris Leahy and Rob Draper which was pumped through the amazing sound system, sprayed by Catch 22. A whole range of different people came down to show their support and soak up the atmosphere, with plenty of opportunities for mingling and catching up with people. It was a definite hit.
We spoke to Robin Ross after the event to find out how he thought it went:
Amazing response to HomeGrown, all folks pulling, shoving and working together. We can move mountains and change just about anything… attitudes to art are looking up… especially in Blackpool!
We also managed to grab Catch 22 for a few words…
All in all, Homegrown was a fantastic demonstration of the range of talent on offer in Blackpool, attracting people from teenagers right through to those at the other end of the spectrum. Blackpool’s residents no longer need to look to Manchester for events of this kind when we’ve got them right here on our doorstep!
