This week a community drumming circle will return to Stanley Park – the latest in a series of events it has hosted over the summer. Elizabeth Gomm shares photographs she took when she stumbled across the last one.

Tidal Beats is a community drumming organisation based in Blackpool. The work it does is based on members’ experiences of the beneficial aspects of group drumming.
The group says that drumming in a group helps people to learn a variety of skills, such as teamwork, the ability to compromise, co-operation and consideration for others, as well as body skills like co-ordination, self-discipline and listening.
Group drumming also increases self-confidence and generates a great feeling of achievement – creating something bigger than the sum of its parts can be very empowering.
During the summer the group has been hosting open-access drumming sessions in Blackpool’s Stanley Park, a mixture of free playing and trying to teach some specific patterns and rhythms.
Weather permitting, the group is meeting on 14th September 6-8pm. As you go through the main gates of Stanley Park at the roundabout (onto Mawson Road, leading to the cafe) there’s a grassy area on the left, by the sunken rose garden. They’ll be there. If you can’t see them, listen out!
Everybody’s welcome, from experienced players to absolute beginners – Tidal Beats believe that if you have a heartbeat, you have a sense of rhythm!
Bring your own drum and folding chair if you can, or let them know if you’re attending without a drum, so they can provide one. See the Facebook event here or visit Tidal Beats website here.
