Interview: Roxanne Warren

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky to be involved in a Blott Studio Art Exhibition entitled Sugar & Spite. While I was there I noted a young film maker and, as the practice aligns itself wonderfully with photography, I got to know her a little better.

View the exhibition film above and treat yourself to her interview below.

Q: Who are you and tell me a bit about yourself

My name is Roxanne Warren, I’m 20 years old and have been studying media since high school. I am currently on the second year of the Digital Production and Film-Making Degree at Blackpool & The Fylde College, but have also been working on various projects outside my studies. I aspire to produce my own films but during my time at University I have had the opportunity to work with companies such as Cuffe and Taylor, live streaming at Lytham Festival, and have enjoyed working as part of a team on commercial jobs.

Q: When did you start getting interested in film making?

When I was a child I remember using Play-Doh to make stop motion animation videos and creating short films with my brother, using our toys. I don’t remember at what point I thought “I want to make films”, it’s just always been there.

Q: Who are your inspirations?

My main inspiration is my mum, she’s an amazing artist and has always encouraged me to be creative, but the main film maker that inspired me to begin a career in film has to be Tim Burton. I love his unique gothic style, heavily influenced by German Expressionist films like ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’. That said, the more I research film history the list of film makers and production designers that inspire me increases.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I’ve just finished working on several commercial commissions so I am now focusing on my own work. I am currently in pre-production for an experimental film that deals with the visualisation of emotional states, and employs evocative symbolism.

Q: What are your main interests in film?

I’ve always wanted to be a director but production design is also very important to me, the overall look of a film can make or break it. My favourite genre is fantasy, perhaps because there is more scope for imagination and creativity; film has always been a source of release for me, when done well a film can transport you to a completely different place or time.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Hopefully doing the same as I do now but on a bigger scale, working with my own production company.
