Film Preview: Moulin Rouge 25th Anniversary Sing-a-long screening at The Arc Cinema

Join Blackpool Film Festival and Electric Pink Voices to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Moulin Rouge with a special sing-a-long screening at The Arc Cinema on Friday 15 May at 7pm.
The film has been selected by Blackpool’s LGBTQ+ and allies community choir Electric Pink Voices, who have been rehearsing the Moulin Rouge songs in advance to help encourage audience members to join in with the singing. This follows on from the success of their previous The Little Mermaid sing-a-long event earlier in the year.

For the LGBTQ+ community, storytelling has always been an act of survival. By joining voices in the communal space of film, Electric Pink Voices hope to ensure that queer stories are seen, heard, and celebrated at the heart of Blackpool’s cultural life. The group chose this film as the main themes of Truth, Freedom, Beauty, and Love resonate with the values cultivated at their rehearsals every week:

  • Freedom: Finding liberation through voice and expression.
  • Beauty: Celebrating diversity and the power of shared sound.
  • Truth: Showing up as your honest, unapologetic self
  • Love: Building solidarity within our chosen family. Like the artists, rebels, and dreamers of the Moulin Rouge, Electric Pink Voices use music to explore equality and self-expression. Together, struggles are acknowledged while celebrating triumphs – honouring artistry as survival and love as resistance.

“Electric Pink Voices are so thankful to be working with Blackpool Film Festival to make this event happen,” said Phill Fairhurst. “It’s such an important opportunity to join together as a community, share our voices, and BFF have given us a platform to tell stories that matter to us and represent what we stand for. We also can’t wait to see everyone there looking fabulous, for a night full of laughter, a few tears – no spoilers, and a proper good sing-along. The choir are ready and waiting for you to join us.”

“The Moulin Rouge. A night club, a dance hall, and a bordello. A kingdom of night time pleasures. Where the rich and powerful come to play with the young and beautiful creatures of the underworld.”

Moulin Rouge, directed by Baz Luhrmann, was one of 2001’s biggest hits. In the film, a poet falls for a beautiful courtesan whom a jealous duke covets. It’s a stylish musical, featuring a variety of 20th century pop hits, with an all-star cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Kylie Minogue. Cleverly using popular music to accompany a tragic romance, it brings life to more traditional storytelling and introduced new audiences to big-screen musicals.

The event will begin with a musical warm-up led by the choir to get those vocal chords going, before the film begins. You can then make the most of this iconic jukebox musical by singing along to hits, such as Lady Marmalade and One Day I’ll Fly Away. Fun props will be provided for you to use during the screening and fancy dress is actively encouraged, so get your best bohemian glad rags on! The song lyrics will be displayed on screen during the film, so the audience will not be expected to know all the words.

Organisers advise that this a film screening, not a live stage show. There will be no trailers and seating is unallocated, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
