Jean Stansfield Park celebrates 100 Years with free family arts and entertainment

Street theatre, comedy performances and family activities will fill Jean Stansfield Park this Saturday as Poulton celebrates the centenary of one of its favourite green spaces – and the remarkable story behind its creation.

This Saturday Jean Stansfield Park will host a day of free family arts and entertainment to mark 100 years since the land was gifted to the community and became one of the area’s most loved green spaces.

Its story began with Jean Stansfield, a nine-year-old girl who sadly died in 1923. In her memory, the Stansfield family purchased a parcel of land from the church and donated it to the town, creating a recreational space where local children could play and spend time outdoors.

To mark the anniversary, Wyre Council and Poulton Partnership have put together a programme of free entertainment running from 10.30am to 4pm, alongside the unveiling of a commemorative stone by the Mayor of Wyre.

Street theatre and outdoor performance take centre stage throughout the day, continuing a welcome trend in Wyre’s events programme that has seen professional arts and family entertainment brought into public spaces free of charge.

Among the highlights are The Maniax, whose high-energy comedy stunt show combines physical comedy, audience participation and a healthy disregard for dignity. The Van Dunk Brothers bring their award-winning synchronised swimming act to dry land, while The Giant Balloon Show (main photo) promises oversized sculptures and silliness to an ‘80s soundtrack.

Alongside the performances, families can try everything from bowling tuition and traditional games to bubble-making activities, while community groups and local organisations will be on hand throughout the day.

The event reflects a growing confidence in how public spaces are being used across Wyre. Along with the recent Big Green Get Together and upcoming Fleetwood Moves Festival, local family events are embracing arts, performance and culture as part of their free offer, creating opportunities for local families to experience high-quality work without leaving their neighbourhoods.

Jean Stansfield Park’s centenary celebration takes place on Saturday 20 June, from 10.30am to 4pm. Admission is free.
