Learn to sing a cappella!

January seems to be the month of dieting, frustrated non-smokers and ill-used gym memberships.  The media can’t seem to make its mind up whether we should detox or retox and is taking bets on when we’re going to give up giving up.

Well how about 2014 being about taking on something new?

We’ve got just the thing.

The Soundwaves are Blackpool’s very own twenty-strong a capella chorus and they are inviting ladies aged fourteen plus to join them for a new year’s challenge.  For four weeks Samantha Roberts, musical director for the Soundwaves, and her troop of harmonious fun loving ladies will welcome you to their fold and take you through simple vocal exercises and teach you three songs to perform with the group.

So what is a capella? It’s singing unaccompanied in harmony. Think The Overtones, The Blanks (with Ted from Scrubs) or The Puppini Sisters who you’ll have heard singing with Michael Buble (lucky ladies).  Samantha says:

The songs are fun and will lift your spirits. We like to have a good time and sing a little, and our practice sessions are usually accompanied by a cup of tea and cake.

soundwavesNow if, like me, you are a bit worried about your voice not making the cut, Sandra, press officer and part of the group, reassures us:

If you’ve ever sung happy birthday at a party, then you CAN sing. You shouldn’t worry, were not X Factor judges! I joined just a year ago and was made to feel so welcome and eventually found my voice!

The four week challenge is already proving popular and the team are looking forward to meeting the new singers and possibly hosting a friends and family night, a chance to show off your new skills.

Blackpool Sound Waves are part of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers and take part in a yearly convention, spending the weekend performing and meeting other choirs from across the UK.

soundwaves2Their FREE learn to sing course will be held at Springfield Greenlands Methodist Church Hall, Bispham Rd, Blackpool, FY2 0LB. It runs on Tuesdays from 21 of January to 11 February 2014 from 7:30pm. Interested? Contact Christine on 07947557774 or Trish on 07811607783.

For more information you can find them on Facebook  or Twitter.
