Art of Punk at Blackpool Music Festival

I’m ashamed to say that, being of that age, I missed out on most of the punk thing, which I’ve tried to remedy in later life, adding to the music collection accordingly. Here’s another opportunity for redemption by suggesting that Blackpool gets behind this admirable event, part of the Blackpool Music Festival.

With the Rebellion Punk Festival earlier in the year, Blackpool seems to be becoming a Mecca for punk fans; long may this develop and continue. This event to be held at the Waterloo Hotel offers another blast of the music that in the ‘70s was truly iconoclastic and which continues to influence across genres today.

Headlined by punk circuit stalwarts Captain Hotknives, Addictive Philosophy and On Trial UK, the back-to-back performances will also feature local heroes Litterbug, Dysphonia and Sick56. Clan of Anarchy and Reject Renegades will also grace the twin stages. Bradford organisation the School Of Rock And Media assists budding musicians with disabilities and has mentored both these latter bands. Festival Organiser, Jon Bamborough said:

“Whilst it’s fantastic that we are able give these two disabled bands a platform to do their stuff, this isn’t about tokenism. Both of these bands are incredibly hard-working, very good and are on that stage on the basis of their performances at the Nice and Sleazy and Blackpool’s own Rebellion event. We are very proud to be working with them.”

So if you’re a die-hard fan, just getting into punk, or like me a prat who stupidly missed out when he had the chance, get down to this fine event for the sound of authenticity.

Like all Blackpool Music Festival events, admission is free but programmes will be on sale to raise funds for Streetlife. This is an amazing local charity that supports, vulnerable young people in finding their way. Find them on facebook or visit www.wearestreetlife.org

I have worked in the housing and transport professions for several local authorities, specialising in policy, strategy preparation and bid writing. Having always had an interest in film, the visual arts in general, theatre, music and lterature, I thought it would be good to combine the writing experience with these interests to contribute to altBlackpool. In addition to writing, my hobbies include watercolour and pastel painting, photography, woodwork, cycling and vegetable gardening.
