Supper Club: Common Bar & Kitchen

Supper Club: Common Bar & Kitchen

It may have just got a flashy new neighbour but don't overlook Common Bar & Kitchen. Tim Christian found it to be the perfect spot to take his group of visiting friends off the beaten tourist track. A lifeline for me during the lockdown of 2020 (remember that?) was regular online meetups to play controversial shooter game Call of Duty: Warzone. The initially slightly chaotic lineup for these games eventually settled down into a regular group of about four or five of us who would (virtually) get together at weekends and play and chat. The other guys in the chat…

Abingdon Street Market reopens its doors to the public

Abingdon Street Market reopens its doors to the public

As a previously frequent visitor to Abingdon Street market I was keen to see what had been done with the space. Although there had been a launch 'do' the previous evening, Saturday 27th May 2023 was the first day of public operation. Prior to the 12:00 doors open time, there were queues down the street from the two Edward Street doors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byQAA3K3URg Only the food hall section has been opened and the retail stall area was still blocked off with roller shutters. It was interesting trying to remember the old layout and transpose it on what's there now. It consists…

Supper Club: Seitan Hustle

Supper Club: Seitan Hustle

In his latest food review Tim Christian needs to get a room with his meat free kebab My first knowledge of Seitan Hustle was a shared Instagram story for a competition to win a free takeaway, showing a picture of incomprehensible delights, colours and textures jumbled together in a mouth-watering, eye-rolling display. I was… intrigued. This post was, among others, one of the catalysts for me to start writing about food, a dawning realisation that something new and different was on offer in the local area and in Fleetwood of all places (this is not intended as a slight towards…

Supper Club: Stefani’s Pizzeria

Supper Club: Stefani’s Pizzeria

In this week's Supper Club restaurant review, Tim Christian tells you to believe the hype about this Neapolitan pizza joint in the heart of Blackpool – and gives us a science lesson while he's at it. I’m not a believer in divine providence, or the weave of fate, or any manner of predestination, but sometimes events align in such a manner that you must grasp the opportunity with both hands. This is especially true if that means each hand ends up with a pizza in it. Most Blackpool residents have likely heard of Stefani’s but, for those who haven’t, Stefani’s…

Supper Club: Elvin’s

The sun is out and Tim Christian is in shorts - getting on his bike and heading to the far flung reaches of Lytham to sample some Lebanese Street food that doesn't disappoint. It was one of those spring days where the weather reaches the heady heights of double digits. The sun comes out, the death of winter is announced and all the bizarre shedding of inhibitions of the British populace in warmish weather takes place: men without shirts, families piling onto the beach and (in my case) trips out the bike. In shorts. Looking for excuses as I always…

Abingdon Market reopening announced

Abingdon Market reopening announced

The much-anticipated reopening of the newly-renovated Abingdon Street Market will take place on Saturday 27th May. The retail side of the market – located via the Abingdon Street entrance – will not open until later this year, but the Edward Street side of the market – redesigned as a food hall and space for live entertainment and community events – will welcome the public at the end of the month. Six local, independent food vendors – which will be announced in the run up to the opening – will be offering free samples from their menu, and two in-house bars…

Supper Club: Upside Down

Supper Club: Upside Down

In his second time hosting the BSC Supper Club – a new series of food reviews – foody Tim Christian visits the cafe promising to bring coffee culture to Blackpool and finds much more besides When looking for recommendations for new and interesting places to eat in Blackpool, one of the most regular suggestions I’ve had was for the next place on my list - Upside Down on Edward Street, just off the square by St John’s Church (very quickly becoming something of a go-to area for fans of good, local food and drink). It’s also a destination I’ve seen…

Supper Club: The Cozy Jazz Cafe

Foody Tim Christian finds a genuine hidden gem on Lytham Road for a low-key launch of our Supper Club – a new series of food reviews Life is full of trite and meaningless phrases but every now and again you find a great example of a phrase fulfilling its actual function and it reinvigorates that phrase beyond its tired overuse. A common one you might find when reading food reviews is “hidden gem”, which can mean anything from a food kiosk down a back alley in the Outer Hebrides to “not McDonald’s” depending on the source. In this case The…

Coffee, cats and cake at Cafe Meow

Coffee, cats and cake at Cafe Meow

David Simper spends a perfect hour in Blackpool's newest coffee shop alongside some friendly felines My cats are long gone and I've never been able to replace them, so I was immediately attracted to the idea of a cat cafe, where you can take a snack and sit with cats. After long experience in hospitality, proprietors Katie Buchanan and Richard Marsh, have established Cafe Meow on Blackpool's Birley Street, the one with the stainless steel arches. I had thought that the need to book online might put people off, but there was a full complement of people waiting to enter…
