Tram Sunday adds some SpareParts

Motionhouse, Traction

Artists, performers and mechanical masterpieces are set to arrive in Fleetwood on 20 July as part of the ever popular Tram Sunday. LeftCoast are working in partnership with Fleetwood Festival of Transport and Wyre Council to add a new element to the day which is set to wow audiences with street theatre, workshops and spectacular performances themed around transport.

SpareParts will focus activity around the Marine Hall and the Mount although a parade, strolling street theatre shows and workshops will also take place in the town centre.  Inside the Marine Hall, the theatre will play host to a cinematic exploration into the future of transport with three large projections taking over the space. Artist Pablo Perrezarate will use a selection of audio gathered from the residents of Fleetwood alongside experimental sound techniques, musical compositions and digital animations to give us this unique glimpse into how we might be getting about in the next millennium and beyond.

There are plenty of ways to participate too with Blackpool-based artists Boz Phillips and Mr D doing a live graffiti paint to create an installation based on the New York Subway and Vanessa Card creating paper lanterns on the day which will feature as part of the SpareParts parade.

If you’re feeling energetic you can take a ride on the Cyclographic-Splodge-a-Matic Spin Painting Machine created by artist Shane Johnstone. This human-powered live painting machine is the perfect way to create unique spiral paintings in the style of the popular 1970s vintage toy, ‘Spirograph’.

Dan Fox, Boom BikesFor those of a musical persuasion, there will be plenty to choose from with Dan Fox’s boom bikes providing pop up stages which will appear at various locations throughout the day, giving bands and performers from the area a chance to bring their music to your ears.  As well as this, three part a capella girl group, The Bobbysocks, will be performing in and around the festival with an eclectic blend of swing, boogie-woogie and alternative country with a transport theme, sure to keep you dancing in the streets.

Later in the afternoon,a mechanical parade will sweep through Fleetwood.  It will be packed with eccentric human-powered vehicles and kinetic contraptions from Rag and Bone, mechanical creatures including Hieronymus the poorly hippo and his doctor from Thingumajig Theatre and pop up musical stages on the back of boom bikes.

The climactic finale to SpareParts will see dance company Motionhouse delight onlookers with their spectacular performance: Traction, on the beach behind the Marine Hall. The show, which lasts twenty minutes, was originally created in 2011 for the Bullring in Birmingham and is a Transformers-esque performance that sees six dancers and three JCB diggers dancing together in a high octane celebration of the harmony between humans and machines.

Michael Trainor, Artistic Director of LeftCoast, said:

This year for SpareParts we’re aiming to fill Fleetwood with amazing arts activities that will be bring a whole new dimension to Fleetwood’s flagship event. The day will be a great opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy this new experience as part of the Tram Sunday celebrations.

Robert Brown, Chairman of Fleetwood Festival of Transport, said:

The committee of Tram Sunday have been looking for a way of keeping the crowds coming into Fleetwood and feel that the introduction of the SpareParts element will attract an even bigger audience to the Fylde Coast.

Performances and activities start from 12 noon on Sunday 20 July 2014 and run through until 6pm.
