On the 18th November I had the pleasure of attending this renowned show. White Caps is a shared contemporary dance project featuring 2 of the UK’s leading b-boy acts: Joel Daniel and Wilkie Branson.
The show’s mixed media elements incorporated music, dance and film and it was immediately engaging. With photography by Rob Saunders and music by Type Sun and DJ Rogue, Leeza, Shave and a Hair cut, Taylor Hayward, Misha Law, Phil King, Crackazat, Boy and Ellie Rubridge.
The dance is heavily influenced by break dance and takes the audience on a journey through its use of movement in dance and its projection work of visual film.
It reflects a lamentative quality or a struggle as the dance literally creeps from quiet movements to expressive leaps and bounds. It begins as an awakening before the dancers collide and embark on their journey upwards.
The film work bonds the dancers on their journey through a rural landscape, by brooks, through dusty and rocky paths, through trees and roots, following a river. Ultimately they reach their destination through contemporary dance with a strong nod to breakdancing and popular culture.
If you get the chance to view the innovative work, do take the opportunity as its exhilarating presentation should appeal to anyone interested in dance or breakdancing.
