If variety is the spice of life, then they’re serving up a veritable vindaloo at the Lowther Pavilion this month.
For starters, Marton Operatics present Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeoman of the Guard from October 7 to 11. Set in the Tower of London in the Tudor age, this popular work tells the story of a soldier under sentence of death, who is rescued by friends but unwittingly involves a travelling jester and his companion in his fate. Comic relief is provided by the jester, the jailer and the housekeeper of the Tower as they – and their attempts to find a mate – get caught up in the tale.
Performances start at 7.30pm and tickets cost £12 for adults, £11 for seniors and children are £6. On Tuesdays you can buy three tickets for the price of two. There is a matinee on Saturday 11 October at 2.30pm and adults are £10 and children £5 for this performance.
Next on the menu is West End star and recording artist Kerry Ellis, who is at the Lowther on Sunday, October 12. Kerry’s dream of performing her first solo concert at the London Palladium materialised in May last year, and was such a huge success that she decided to take it on tour. The show is inspired by her theatre career and she will be singing songs from roles she has created and played. Kerry is accompanied by an eight-piece band and special guests to be announced.
Kerry has performed in lead roles in London and on Broadway, and she has achieved chart-topping success as a recording artist as well as touring extensively with Brian May of Queen.
Kerry says, “The Palladium show was such a thrill for me it feels only right to be touring the UK with my first solo show. I have such loyal fans that it will be amazing to share and perform all the tracks from my new album.”
The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £20.50.
Spirit medium Simon Goodfellow is at the Lowther on Monday, October 13, while the following night there is a fundraising Beetle Drive, organised by Friends of the Lowther which is held in the studio bar with a 7.30pm start.
Described by Time Out as “probably the best satirical comic we’ve produced in the last two decades. Intelligent, biting and silly,” Andy Zaltzman brings his show, Satirist for Hire, to the Lowther for one night on Thursday, October 16 and tickets are £12.
Zaltzman is the British-based half of the global smash hit topical podcast The Bugle, in which he co-lampoons the planet alongside The Daily Show’s John Oliver. Yyour ticket will entitle you to submit, via email, a request for him to address an issue that you feel requires satirising.
Do you have a global gripe, a British bellyache, or a personal peeve? Are you exasperated by economics, piqued by politics, or wound up about the world? Whether it is a general grumble or a specific bleat, send in your satirical query to: [email protected]. Realistically, Zaltzman will not have time to satirise everyone’s pet political grievances, so make it good.
Talon were formed back in September 1997. Fifteen years on and they are recognised throughout the industry as the world’s definitive Eagles tribute show.
The 15th Anniversary Tour, which stops off at the Lowther on Saturday, October 18, features all the classic Eagles hits from their timeless back catalogue including Hotel California, Lyin’ Eyes, Take It Easy, Desperado, Take It To The Limit, Life In The Fast Lane, The Last Resort and many more plus Don Henley’s solo hits Boys Of Summer, Dirty Laundry, One Day At A Time and Funk #49 by Joe Walsh.
Although the show now features ten world class musicians, including a Horn Section, it is the immensely powerful vocal harmony and exact musical production on which Talon have built their reputation. Tickets start at £18.50.
