Local Christmas Gift Ideas: Welcome to the Seaside Tea Towel

The ‘Welcome to The Seaside’ tea towel was specially commissioned as part of Project Object, a community project run by Blackpool Arts  Service during 2012. Illustrator Lois Blackburn drew from the Grundy Art Gallery’s Cyril Critchlow Collection of 1950s Blackpool Souvenirs to create a vibrant silk painting design which has been translated into textile home wares.

Project Object commissioned three artists / designers to explore the wealth of historic collections Blackpool has to offer and use this as inspiration to create a range of contemporary items. Members of the community volunteered to be Project Object ‘apprentices’ and participated in four weekly workshops with the artists as they developed ideas for the products and early prototypes.

Although the ‘apprentices’ were not assisting the artist in the final design, the workshops were creative and hands on which allowed them to develop thier own ideas following the artists’ methods.

This gift is suitable for anyone who likes pretty and quirky kitchen things!  It costs just £6. To be in with a chance of bagging your very own Welcome to the Seaside Tea Towel simply follow @altblackpool on Twitter and look out for us announcing the lucky winner later in the week (competition closed: 24/12/12).
