This February, Lip Service Theatre are returning to the Grand Theatre with their take on a popular literary classic. Picture of Doreen Gray has taken its name from the original Oscar Wilde literary classic, Picture of Dorian Gray. The stage performance of Doreen Gray plays on the main character’s lifestyle as a successful radio presenter who has her own show, named Even More 4, with highly successful ratings. But behind all the glamour, and the advantages of the spot light, Doreen, has hit the big 50. She feels her life has crumbled and thinks her face does not fit the bill any more. It is only when she attends a school reunion that Doreen finds a self-portrait from her youth and makes a pact with the picture with dark and mysterious consequences.
In Oscar Wilde’s novel, Dorian, is a youthful, incredibly beautiful man, who is approached by an intrigued artist who wants to paint his portrait. The artist’s requests to capture Dorian’s youthfulness in a portrait become the bane of Dorian’s life as he becomes the painter’s muse. The plot thickens, gets darker and more sinister, as Dorian begins to experience sins in his life which age him but only show in the portrait.
Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, artistic directors of Lip Service said: “Laughter is a life-affirming experience, it is a signal of acceptance and positive interaction. It is our primary aim to provide a positive night out at the theatre, which is cathartic and exhilarating.”
Lip Service is celebrating thirty years’ success this year by touring with the enigmatic Picture of Doreen Gray. Lip Service was founded in 1985 by Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding and has toured the UK, Eastern Europe, USA, Pakistan, and Germany.
