Interview: Laura Shevaun Green

Who are you?

I am a Fine Artist who goes by the name LadySkull. Some people call me Laura which is, sadly, less exciting.

What do you do?

The best way to describe what I do is to say I make artwork that falls into the gothic genre. I have a homeware business called SkullPunkery that is best known for its decorative skulls but is now growing to include other products. My work for SkullPunkery has a heavy dose of humour whereas the other installation-based work I create outside of this explores much darker themes.Laura Shevaun Green4

Where do you work?

Currently I am working from my studio at home in Thornton. In the future I fancy sharing a studio space with another likeminded artist. I do tend to surround myself with things that inspire me and these unusual objects often end up in my work, so that person would have to put up with treasures such as Timmy (a dolls head I bought at a car boot sale). With Timmy and I sharing a studio already, three could be a crowd.

Why do you do it?

I don’t know how to do anything else; it is difficult to put into words. I have tried other ways of working and I have even tried the odd nine to five, but somehow I always just end up here.Laura Shevaun Green

Who/what inspires you and why?

I listen to Pop Punk while I am working and I draw a lot of inspiration from classic 80s cult films like Beetlejuice, The Labyrinth and Lost Boys, things that fed my imagination as a child still do so as an adult. I am fascinated by the pop surrealism movement, the miniature worlds that Thomas Doyle creates, in particular, are exquisite.

What else should we know?

I am not a scary as I sound. Granted I am a tad on the quirky side but I don’t bite. Honest!

What are you doing next?Laura Shevaun Green3

SkullPunkery is growing and so Timmy and I are looking for a more permanent space to keep and sell my wares. I am also hoping to have an exhibition in the Fylde area this year with an installation piece that I have underway. This work delves into religious extremist groups and cults, an area I have been researching for some time.

How can we find you?

You can find me on my Facebook page: Skull Punkery. I have a blog on Tumblr: lauragreenart. Or email me:[email protected].
