On Friday 16 October 2015, Blackpool Opera House presents the World Premiere of a brand new musical Last Night a DJ Saved My Life which will star the legendary David Hasselhoff.

In spite of the 80s-styled title, that decade is no longer the stuff of our nostalgia apparently, and it seems that 70s retro has also had its day; nowadays we like to yearn for the 90s. The years when Friends, Fresh Prince and Spice Girl Power ruled, when Barney stood cheek-by-jowl with Jurassic Park and when phenomena such as Pikachu, Monica Lewinsky and The Phantom Menace were released on the world.

This is of course also the decade that saw Britpop, West Coast rappers Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre and Seattle Grunge taking the world by storm however, their stories are for another day because if there is one instantly recognisable icon that unites the Western world in their memories of popular culture in the 90s – it just might be the red bathing suits of BayWatch.

It is therefore fitting that this new musical will star the leading man from that show; The Hoff, as a fast-living, hard-playing DJ and night club owner on the party isle of Ibiza at the start of the 1990s: The narrative is set to unfold with a string of hypocritical parental behaviour when his teenage daughter arrives to stay for the summer.

It is unlikely to be the most complex or surprising of story-lines, however, as it comes from the same creative stall as ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats’ and ‘Boogie Nights’ it will certainly contain all the elements of a hit musical formula. Underscored by massive time-appropriate hits such as Mariah Carey’s ‘Hero’ and M.C.Hammer’s ‘Can’t Touch This’ this show will tick all our heart-warming, singing-along-a, bootie-shaking boxes – and sometimes you just don’t need anything else!

It is fantastic news and somehow fitting for this brilliant and quirky town of ours that this show is premiering here and that a superstar of international acclaim will be a part of it. Haters will always hate but The Hoff has, throughout his career, had his tongue planted firmly in his own cheek.  From his contribution to popular culture via the now cultish Knight Rider to singing at the Berlin Wall the night it came down and being a judge on America’s Got Talent, his superstar status is absolutely unquestionable.

Blackpool Council’s Graham Cain said: “This is another fantastic coup for Blackpool and we’re absolutely thrilled to be hosting a World Premiere. Our investment in the Winter Gardens is now really beginning to pay off in terms of the world class shows we’re attracting.”

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life previews at Blackpool Opera House (within the Winter Gardens) on Friday 16 October 2015.
