Belgian-American Nils Westergrad is set to paint in Blackpool this weekend ahead of Sand, Sea & Spray 2015. Nils is flying in direct from Brussels and, in a coup for the town, it’s his first time painting anywhere in the UK outside of London.
The 22 year old who comes from Richmond Virginia started out doing his art on the street as a kid, plus creating sets for school theatre productions and his enthusiasm for urban art grew from there. His work can be found on walls and in galleries in Europe, America and Australia and, as well as a keen passion for urban art, has also produced music videos and animations which have played in film festivals across the world.
Nils marks his work with his signature butterfly stencil rather than a traditional tag and choses to create many of his urban art murals based on images of his friends and family, often saying that he wants every city in the world to have a portrait of someone he cares about.
Speaking about his upcoming visit, Nils said:
“Its definitely the first time I’ve been to Blackpool, or anywhere in England outside of London. Im looking forward to getting a more permanent wall up in the UK – I’ve only done some temporary walls in the UK.”
Robin Ross, Artistic Director of Sand, Sea & Spray, added:
“It’s a massive deal to be bringing Nils to Blackpool. The fact that he hasn’t painted anywhere in the UK outside of the London and it being his first appearance in the country this year is just amazing. We’re all excited to see what he comes up with – its sure to be something pretty special that will get the festival off to a great start.”
Nils will be painting between Nandos and the Grand Theatre from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 June.
