Tim Burton’s Switch On Bonanza

Tim Burton

This year’s summer may have had peaks and troughs where the weather is concerned, and those long darker and colder evenings are drawing in. But, there is one more date for your calendar, and this should be one you will not forget. Of course, it is Blackpool’s most important date – Switch On – and what a date to sparkle as brightly as the twinkling Illuminations.

This year one of Hollywood’s ‘A Listers’, producer/director extraordinaire Tim Burton, is set to light up the promenade and Blackpool Tower, when he flicks the switch to turn on Blackpool Illuminations for their 2015 season.

In Tim Burton’s own words he is “Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s biggest fan” which is a great accolade for the Pleasure Beach and for Blackpoo itself.

Tim Burton, recently shot scenes for his forthcoming film Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children in Blackpool, both on the promenade and inside the Tower. Previously he also shot the video for Here with me’ by The Killers. So, for Blackpool to have secured such a famous director, writer, artist and producer, all rolled into one, to turn on the lights is a spectacular feat before the Switch On evening even begins.

Beginning on Friday 4 September the promenade will play host to a massive event over three days with an eclectic array of live music, performed to a crowd of over twenty thousand people on the Tower Festival Headland.

Some of the acts on the bill include Professor Green, Lawson, and The Vamps, who will perform live, and it is an understatement to say the teenagers especially, are going to love it – alongside all the audience alike.

For the families out and about on the Saturday morning CBBC will broadcast their Saturday Shoutlive, from the same arena on Blackpool promenade opposite the Tower. Then during the Saturday evening Pat Sharp will be hosting a fun filled 80s revival by bringing us sensational acts such as the original 80s all girl pop group, Bananarama, who will headline this year’s switch-on weekend. The Sunday will be a fun packed comedic event where Al Murray, the Pub Landlord will take over the stage, bringing laughs to the arena.

The lucky recipients of an allocated 15,000 free tickets will be given wristbands to allow their entry to the Friday night event, however there are still some tickets left to purchase.

Councillor Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said:

“Millions of people around the world have enjoyed the films Tim Burton has directed including Edward Scissorhands, Batman, and Planet of the Apes. It is gearing up to be one the best switch-on events we have ever had.”

So join the rest, and be the best, visit Blackpool’s biggest event this year, and get yourselves down to watch the ‘Switch-on’, on Friday 4 September and across iFest weekend.
