Showzam! Set To Return For 2017

Headless Lady at Showzam Central

Oh such extremely good news – Showzam! is back. This festival has quickly become a winter gloom breaking Blackpool institution February is always my month for wondering how long winter is going to go on for, but the days are lengthening and a bit of decent weather and performance art in the streets of Blackpool goes a long way to brighten my winter darkened mood.

This festival challenges Blackpool’s negative image of kiss me quick hats, cheap beer and tooth breaking confectionery. It is to be hoped that its prominence grows and becomes a magnet for an increasing number of creative people. For those in the vicinity, why travel to London or even Manchester for this stuff when you can get it in Blackpool, on the doorstep with all the resort’s charms thrown in?

And then there’s nipping out of work for a coffee treat and finding weirdos driving pimped up mobility scooters round the streets, weaving between shoppers and February’s intrepid half-term visitors (encountering other events will be possible). The 2017 event features Rob Roy Collins, Pete Anderson and Polly Hoops in the street entertainment role. More of this stuff please!

So what’s on between 11-14 February for Showzam’s tenth outing?

The festival will be wowed by acts including the UK’s most flexible contortionist, Pixie Le Knot; goldfish bowl girl; and the headless lady! Visitors can also expect comedy hoola-hooping, street magic in what will be a thrilling free family extravaganza.

Cllr Campbell, Blackpool Council Deputy Leader said; “We are delighted to announce the Showzam! 2017 line-up. This is a fantastic four-day festival providing entertainment for young and old, families and couples.

Eileen Ormand, Town Centre and Blackpool BID Manager said; “Blackpool BID is really pleased to be working with VisitBlackpool to deliver Showzam! 2017 during the February half-term holiday. It makes such a huge difference to the town centre.”

The show will also feature Michael Jordan’s High Jinx Magic and Illusion show at Viva Blackpool, not to mention the famously flamboyant Carnival Ball, returning to the Tower Ballroom on Saturday 11th February with a Mardi Gras theme and a glamorous and sexy dress code. Tickets for the ball are £15, with an early bird offer of £12 before 31 December 2016, so get in quick. Book from Tourist Information Centres, The Blackpool Tower or www.theblackpooltower.com/showzam

Many Showzam! events are free. If you want to make a plan, then use www.visitblackpool.com/Showzam for updates. Thanks as ever to VisitBlackpool and Blackpool BID for pulling this treat together.

I have worked in the housing and transport professions for several local authorities, specialising in policy, strategy preparation and bid writing. Having always had an interest in film, the visual arts in general, theatre, music and lterature, I thought it would be good to combine the writing experience with these interests to contribute to altBlackpool. In addition to writing, my hobbies include watercolour and pastel painting, photography, woodwork, cycling and vegetable gardening.
