Spamalot gallops into The Winter Gardens this September, and with perfect vocals, dancing spam, and witty comedy, I hope you’ve got your coconuts ready. This musical delight has a lot to live up to as it is “Lovingly ripped off” from the highly successful 1975 motion picture ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’, however after tonight I can say that my high expectations were exceeded.
The movie fans will be happy to know that the musical stays true to the original material with favourite characters such as the Knights who say Ni, The French taunter, and one of my personal favourites, The Black Knight.
The Black Knight scene (Spoilers ahead) is one of particular hilarity with King Arthur going against the black knight in a bid to continue his quest, which results in the foe losing all his limbs. Now this scene is very technical with each limb falling off on cue, or in tonight’s case just hanging there, to which I have to give props to the cast who managed to cover everything so well that I’m left questioning whether anything actually went wrong at all.
The casting for this show was brilliant and each individual cast member is an asset to this show. From the booming bass to the top soprano the vocals were superb and never faulted no matter how much action there was on stage. I have to give special mention of course to Bob Harms who takes on the lead role of King Arthur and manages to add his own improvisations on stage during the show, which had the audience in stitches. Also Sarah Harlington, who I’ve previously seen in Avenue Q, plays the Lady of the Lake and brings the diva attitude that is required for one of my favourite songs “The Song that goes like this”. Her voice was stunning tonight and sounded effortless which made my, and other audience member’s hairs standing up on the back of our necks.
Overall if you’re the sort of person who is into comedic musicals I suggest that you go and see this show, or even if you’re not into musicals I suggest you go see it, as there is something in this for everyone. If you choose to miss out, this is a message from me to you; “Your mother is a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries”.
