Leftcoast’s continuing creative legacy in Blackpool has thrown a number of opportunities across the creative community in Blackpool and in recent times further afield.
Earlier on in the year Leftcoast placed a call out for a long term socially engaged artists residency in Fleetwood and Haweside. Born from these placements new micro commissions have come to light.
The third bedroom micro residencies invite artist to respond with an initial expression of interest to take part in the residencies from December 2018 to June 2019.
Described as an opportunity to be experimental and test ideas the successful applicants are encouraged to open up a dialogue with the permanent residency artists to enhance the perhaps sometimes feeling of isolation of a new artist living in areas that have been identified as lacking community, the brief discusses and encourages quick bursts of activity to respond and research a sense of place.
The brief suggests applications from individuals who work with and respond to people and place. With backgrounds of practice exploring hidden challenges related to such environments to highlight and explore alternative outcomes.
The residencies are based at Haweside, a social housing estate in Blackpool managed by Blackpool Coastal Housing. Located quite close to the beach and illuminations, the estate shows a side of Blackpool where common ground is shared physically but not always socially, where real people and their families make their homes. Haweside once had a thriving library now an empty art deco building with a thriving high street nearby, Highfield Road.
Fleetwood a short distance from Blackpool with a strong history rooted within the fishing industry which has seen a decline in recent years. The Flakefleet estate has more community based activities than Haweside. But Leftcoast again promotes its the people who make a place with a rich hidden underbelly of stories and shared commonalities.
The residencies are partnered with housing associations who have worked previously with Leftcoast and are interested in seeing how artists will explore the project as a physical resident and the associated outcomes.
