Jubilee Tram Parade attracts promenade crowds

Blackpool has one of the finest heritage tram fleets in the world. These were out in force to help celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee on the 2nd June 2022, with a Blackpool jubilee tram parade. We have two videos capturing the event.

Starting from Pleasure Beach, a dozen vehicles progressed north along the Promenade towards Little Bispham, before breaking at the Tower Headland for an extended photo call. People thronged the route, showing that the heritage trams, including three of the Illuminated vehicles, have lost none of their allure.

At Tower Headland all ages crowded round the vehicles, admiring them and chatting to staff. Smiles were on all faces, passengers inside the trams waving their Union Jacks enthusiastically. In these dark times, we all surely need more cheering events such as this.

Time to move the jubilee tram parade on and it was a careful and skilled task to marshall the vehicles for departure, with happy people so close to them, this being handled with aplomb.

Blackpool Transport Services provides a heritage tram service through the season and this is the only one to share rails with a scheduled service. The Rigby Road depot is a hub of tram preservation and restoration expertise. This all gives the potential for more events such as the jubilee tram parade in the future. People clearly want to see these trams, and not just in a museum.

I have worked in the housing and transport professions for several local authorities, specialising in policy, strategy preparation and bid writing. Having always had an interest in film, the visual arts in general, theatre, music and lterature, I thought it would be good to combine the writing experience with these interests to contribute to altBlackpool. In addition to writing, my hobbies include watercolour and pastel painting, photography, woodwork, cycling and vegetable gardening.
