Rebellion Festival Q&A: Desperate Measures

Punks will descend on Blackpool this weekend for Rebellion Festival where more than 300 bands will occupy six indoor stages and a new outdoor stage at the Tower headland. London/New Zealand punk and rock four piece Desperate Measures play the Empress Ballroom at 12.15pm on Friday (5 August). Guitarist Michael Gaffney tells Blackpool Social Club why you should be there.

What informs your music and songwriting?

It’s a cliche, but everything, just day to day stuff. It could be something that makes you smile or rubs you up the wrong way, anything that makes you want to pick up the guitar and say something.

How did the pandemic impact your music and how does it feel to be back on the road?
Live wise, it was a bit shit but from a recording and songwriting point of view, that window was great, especially for us, we had the chance to hone down what we wanted to sound like and explore what worked.

What are you up to at the moment artistically?
Currently I’m drinking Prosecco with a guitar on my lap. Artistically merry.

Tell us your most embarrassing or surreal experience.
Too many to mention, especially for these readers.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be doing with your life?
I don’t know really, since I was 14 this is all I’ve ever wanted to do, I’ve never thought otherwise, maybe work in Greggs, I like sausage rolls. Freebies.

What’s on your rider?
Sausage rolls, as discussed. Beer, Heineken Silver is great, recently got on to that. Vodka, Whiskey, although never ever give our bass player whiskey, trust me. Assortment of crisps is always a good one.

What song do you wish you’d written?
Tough question, if i had to say, Stop In The Name Of Love. It’s pop perfection.

What’s your worst lyric?
All of them!

Are you looking forward to playing Rebellion and is there anything you’d like to check out while you’re in Blackpool?
Really looking forward to it, it’s gonna be great to play the Empress. We’ve got a big sound and I love a big stage. Bring it on. Well… we’re not on till late so to keep occupied il have a wander down the beach probably, bit of a go on the arcades too.

What can we expect from your live set?
Just an in your face rock n roll show. Long as we’re all still upright.
