Local artist Becky Davies tells us about her fundraiser for Counselling in the Community – a local charity that has provided her, and countless others in Blackpool, with vital support.
Hello, I’m Becky Davies some of you may know me as Grumpy Girl Graphics, I’m a freelance designer and artist. Back in January 2022 I designed the Crying Is Cool hoodie. If I’m being brutally honest I designed this out of spite after being called “overemotional”.
I’m a sensitive soul and I cry quite a bit, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, so I decided that I wanted to make something that I could wear, that would showcase emotional sensitivity in a good light. I really want to help end the stigma around being an outwardly emotional human being – especially for men – so I consciously made the design unisex.
After having a few people message me over the past year asking when they would be able to get their hands on one again, I thought it would be a good idea to release it again to coincide with Joseph Packman’s fundraiser for local charity Counselling in the Community.
The event, at Dirty Blondes tomorrow (8th July, 12pm-2am) is a Day of All Sorts with all money raised donated to the charity. With your £5 entry you’ll hear live music from Jekyll, Chris Wilde and Daisy Atkinson among others, as well as live spoken word poetry and, of course, the chance to get your hands on my Crying is Cool t-shirt. They’re available in a few different colours this time which is a nice little change from last time, they’re available in sizes XS-XXXL and made from organic cotton.
Myself and Joe have both used Counselling in the Community. It’s a great charity that has helped hundreds of other people in Blackpool. It’s a grassroots organisation that helps provide counselling to people who can’t necessarily afford to pay privately or to wait however long to be seen by someone through the NHS. This is an essential service here in Blackpool, where many live below the poverty line and many more suffer with our mental health. Counselling in the community has got me through some really tough times, I don’t know where I would be without them, so designing a t-shirt to raise funds for them is the least that I can do.
I decided to do this print run through Everpress – they are a super sustainable company that makes every garment to order, so there is no waste at all! You’ll be able to place your order through a link or scan a QR code at the event and place your order through that. Once the campaign is over all the t-shirts will be printed together and posted out together to save on emissions. I’ve used Everpress quite a few times now and the quality is always really good. They get all the details in my designs which I love.
Grumpy Girl Graphics’ Crying is Cool t-shirt for Counselling in the Community will be available from tomorrow at the Bag of All Sorts fundraiser at Dirty Blondes or order it online here.
