When Blackpool Social Club writer Zowie Swan wrote a series of spooky tales for Halloween, the Grand Theatre was among her many captivated readers. Now she’s bringing her tales to theatre audiences.
Zowie drew on local myths and legends to write her daily instalments before the Grand Theatre approached her to facilitate a discussion around local folklore.
Next week the Grand hosts Lore, a new production from award-winning company James Wilton Dance.
“It’s a folklore-inspired journey into a pagan world of gods, demons and humans, all embodied through the otherworldly athleticism of the dancers,” says Zowie who got a preview of the show and is hosting a workshop for locals interested in finding out more about these themes on the Fylde Coast next week.
“The themes in the production have fascinating parallels with our own Norse and Celtic history here on the Fylde Coast,” says Zowie. “This piece blends myth and legend with folklore and history, and takes the art of oral storytelling and expresses it through the human form.
“My talk will explore our local folklore and histories and how they connect us to a global culture of storytelling and tradition.”
The discussion with Zowie will be held at The Space (Dress Circle Level, Grand Theatre) on Saturday 3rd February from 1:30pm until 3:30pm.
Tickets are free, but need to be booked via [email protected] to secure your place. Booking is open now.
LORE itself will take place on Thursday 8th February in the theatre and you can book tickets here.
