Off the back of his homecoming gig at Bootleg, guitar virtuoso Jon Gomm releases his first new track in three years.
Gomm says he was inspired by Blackpool for his new single – an inventive cover of Erasure’s ’80s classic, A Little Respect.
“It’s the ultimate anthem of pride,” he said. “My hometown Blackpool is as queer as folk, as we say in the North of England, and so it’s always been very accepting in that sense. I have found that the more you accept others, the more accepting you make the world you live in, and the more you’ll be accepted yourself.”
Gomm is a master of fingerstyle acoustic guitar and has been named ‘Best Acoustic Guitarist In The World’ by readers of Guitar World and Total Guitar.
“Back in the early days of the fingerstyle guitar explosion on Youtube, a lot of us were using famous tunes to showcase the possibilities of this way of playing,” Gomm says. “These days, they’re everywhere, which made me not wanna do it for a long time. But I find some modern solo guitar covers can be just about impressing people. I wanted to try to make something beautiful.”
Best known for his viral hit Passionflower, which shot him from relative obscurity to international renown, Gomm plays all over the world. He has just completed a headline tour of China, and his next stop is a clinic tour of Europe in conjunction with Ibanez Guitars, having become the first acoustic artist to design a signature guitar model for them in 2020.
Now based in West Yorkshire, earlier this month Gomm also played a sold out gig at Bootleg to a room bursting with pride and appreciation for one of our town’s most successful musical sons. Proudest, of course, was Jon’s equally talented mum Elizabeth who was on hand with her trusty camera to capture the magic.
