Join New Langdale Photographers for a year long project in Hawes Side

Get ready for an exciting photographic adventure! From now until 2026, the New Langdale Photographers, an exceptional group of photographers with diverse needs, will partner with Blackpool-based photographer Claire Griffiths.

This collaboration explores how creativity can cultivate meaningful shared experiences, contributing to a lasting legacy. The project seeks to uncover the hidden gems of the Hawes Side area of Marton through a year-long initiative.

Previously, the New Langdale Photographers undertook an extensive project highlighting the contributions of Blackpool Borough Architect J.C. Robinson, who designed 30 notable buildings in the area, including the Derby Baths and South Shore Lido. This effort culminated in an exhibition at The Grundy Art Gallery. Additionally, throughout 2023, they worked with artist Morag Myerscough to capture images of Central Drive, which inspired a traveling 3D sculpture exhibited in Blackpool. Claire Griffiths, a recent winner of the British Journal of Photography Portrait Prize, uses photography to explore themes related to community experiences and the benefits of creativity for well-being and conversation.

The project hosts a monthly photography walk that is open to everyone. It takes place on the second Thursday of each month at 10:15 AM at the Bostonway Community Centre, located at Bostonway FY4 4YB.

The initiative invites both past and present residents of Hawes Side to join these informal photography sessions, documenting the unique and vibrant character of the area, including Crossland Road Park and Bridge Farm Recreation Park. The ultimate aim is to create a remarkable exhibition that captures the essence of the Hawes Side community through photography.
All skill levels are welcome and upcoming sessions take place on:
  • 20 March
  • 10 April
  • 8 May
  • 12 June
  • 10 July
  • 14 August
  • 11 September
  • 9 October
  • 13 November
  • 11 December
We also encourage you to bring your photographs, memorabilia, or memories of Marton—both historical and contemporary—that could contribute to a creative outcome or a community calendar or greeting card. Let’s come together to celebrate the beauty of our surroundings.

Each session will start and end with refreshments, providing a chance to chat and shape the project, ensuring that the sessions remain community-led. Cameras are available for loan during the sessions, but any camera, including smartphones, is also welcome.

Councillor Neal Brookes expressed, “Both Kim Critchley and I, as Hawes Side Ward Councillors, are thrilled about this project that offers our residents a chance to explore the rich history of Hawes Side alongside the talented New Langdale Photographers and their friends. We look forward to creating a pictorial record for Hawes Side and Blackpool residents to enjoy for years to come.”

Claire Griffiths added, “Sharing diverse narratives within a community like Blackpool is essential for building connections. The inherently democratic nature of photography allows everyone to capture meaningful images that contribute to the unique story of places like Hawes Side, where fishing and market gardening have historically flourished.”
