Outdoor cinema is something that I have wanted to experience for a long time now. Thankfully this drive-in opportunity will be coming to Blackpool in October, for three nights only, from the 25th to the 27th. Thanks to an overwhelming surge of public interest, this event can now go ahead.
The event will take place at Wyndyke farm, offering something for film-lovers of all ages. There will be a different film each night and every film will be projected on the enormous sixty metre screen. Approximately one hundred cars will be allowed into the drive-in each night. The price for one car is £15, meaning that with a car full of cinema lovers, this becomes much cheaper than a trip to the local multiplex. Sound for the pictures will be provided through FM radios attached to the cars, beaming out a sound to accompany the pictures rolling on the celluloid.
Callum McDonald of Impact Events said: “We wanted to do something different for Blackpool. This is something that is rarely experienced in this country and we are confident it will catch on.”
Outdoor events have been growing rapidly in the Fylde, with Blackpool’s own Comedy Carpet and Lytham Proms proving that people love an opportunity to see entertainment in an outdoors area. With the help of this new outdoor cinema, these airy events promise to grow in popularity. You won’t have to worry about the dreary weather once curled up in the comfort of your car.
This is a great opportunity for film-buffs and casual cinema-goers alike, however, this event could all too quickly turn into a novelty if not in commission at appropriate times. Therefore, the shows will only be active during special seasonal times, such as, Valentine’s Day and the start of summer. Hopefully, this will keep the drive-in feeling fresh and new.
The local interest in this event has been great and crucial in allowing it to go ahead. The various films will be picked through polls compiled by residents and people supporting the event. At this point in time the favourite picks include Wes Craven’s chiller, A Nightmare on Elm Street and the crowd-pleasing musical, Grease which features a whole musical section set in a typical American drive-in. Although not a typical British emblem, the drive-in is a staple of Americana. I, for one, cannot wait to get down to the drive-in, at Wyndyke Farm.
Tickets for this event are only available by booking online or over the phone. For more information on this event and to get hold of tickets please call Impact Events on (01253) 767279 or visit the website.
