John Hegley

I’m looking forwards to this one I must say! Legendary writer, comedic poet, singer and all round entertainer John Hegley is coming to Blackpool for one night only this Friday, 21 February.

A staple of the Edinburgh Festival and eternally present across the live circuit and TV, John Hegley is bringing his own brand of wry observation of the myriad complexities of modern life to the Blackpool Catholic Club on Queen Street.

As part of the many events, talks and workshops attached to the current Grundy Exhibition, Matt Stokes’ Dance Swine Dance, which explores musical subcultures including Northern Soul, The Grundy has booked John Hegley to perform a mix of poetry and live songs to compliment the gallery’s show. Hegley will be joined after his performance by the world famous Northern Soul DJ David Belcher for what promises to be a floor burning session of classics.

It’s a nice touch that The Grundy are breaching the walls of the gallery and bringing this particular event out into a different Blackpool venue, which, with its rich history of Northern Soul clubs, will bring that slightly gritty Northern musical heritage back to one of its spiritual homelands.  So a good night is promised. John Hegley alone is worth the ticket price, having seen him perform many times I know his offbeat angle on the world will bring many a smile to those who come, but to also get to hear David Belcher spin the best in Northern Soul; it’s going to a night long remembered!

Doors open at 7:30pm for the 8:00pm start.  Tickets are £8, students or concessions £5. Tickets are available at Visit Blackpool or by phoning 01253 478222.  Tickets are also available on the door on the night.
