So the wonderful
Showzam! is over for another year but fear not! For those of us who have always had a yearning to run away and join the circus, salvation is at hand in the form of
Circus Academy, a weekly 90 minute session held at
Bispham Community Centre.
The class is run by two ex-circus performers, Tamara Proshkina and José Torralba, who both have a wealth of experience. Originally, Tamara’s career began in sports acrobatics and gymnastics but sixteen years ago she joined a circus troupe’s Russian swings aerial act and then went on to perform her own aerial silks act until 2002. She now feels it is time for her to teach the next generation of performers.
José Torralba has got an amazing thirty seven years of circus performing under his belt with various circuses. His talents lie mainly with flying trapeze but he has also performed high wire, trampoline, and springboard acts. In 1990 he opened his own school for circus performers and has coached young people and adults ever since.
At Circus Academy there is the opportunity to try out many exciting activities such as trampoline, aerial hoop, corde lisse (aerial rope), flying and static trapeze, aerial silks and gymnastic tumbling, all under the careful guidance of Tamara and José.
It’s a fantastic but demanding workout and a great way to keep fit, learn new skills and have a very entertaining time. It’s also quite an unusual hobby so it definitely makes for a great talking point with family and friends.
Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like it before, the class is completely mixed-ability and is suitable for anyone aged 14 and over.
The session runs from 8.15pm-9.45pm and costs £6 per person, which makes it excellent value for money. So, if you’d like a little excitement in your life, go and see what Circus Academy is all about and learn to bounce, jump, swing, roll and fly though the air with a bunch of friendly and like-minded individuals. You won’t regret it.
