Occasionally you can saunter along to a gig not knowing quite what to expect. Other times you know exactly what you’ll get. You may have done your research on the band first, played a few tunes on Youtube, checked out the influences and the bio, but still come out blown away and mesmerised by what you’ve witnessed. Well, that’s a pretty good description of how I felt when I left The Blue Room last Saturday night having been lucky enough to catch a one off performance at the venue by the incredible Midas Fall.
I’d checked out a few clips online, but nothing prepares you for being up close and personal. It’s a little like hiring the band for your own living room and then being shunted into the back garden. The Blue Room have invested well in their new PA set up and on Saturday it was tested to the max. From the first chord struck, the expectant audience were treated to a cacophony of sound and the next forty minutes or so the band took us on an epic and magical musical voyage.
What added more spice to the night was that taking his place behind an impressive drum kit was The Blue Room’s very own Steve Pellatt, the events and promotions co-ordinator. Steve had already informed us that this was to be the only gig that Midas Fall were to play at the venue, so naturally it wasn’t one to be missed. Steve encountered a few gremlins half way through the set when his bass drum pedal threw a wobbler, but after some very nifty running repairs by the man himself during a swathing guitar break, it largely went unnoticed and the show left everyone in the room utterly breathless.
The Blue Room is lucky to host bands such as Midas Fall. Having extensively toured Europe and being a particular favourite in Greece, you can tell these guys know how to grab a crowd and keep it spellbound throughout the whole set. At the front are Elizabeth Heaton and Rowan Burn. They keep you hooked from the start. Rowan’s majestic ethereal guitar playing swims around your head and sucks you right in. It’s accompanied by a fine vocal and guitar by Elizabeth. The sound they create is both unique and exciting. I did hear elements of Evanescence in there, with a smidgeon of Muse and it certainly had an edge. But as much as you may compare their sound to other influences, Midas Fall are very much a unique band, with their own impressive signature sound.
I knew they would be good, but not quite this good and it’s very easy to see why they are a popular band. Having spent time very recently in the studio working on a new album, I can’t wait to get my hands on it. If the live performances are any indication of what is coming next, then we are in for a real treat. Visually they are superb, but it is the sound and the construction of the songs that really hit you and leave you with a euphoric feeling. I left The Blue Room with my heart beating rapidly and my ears ringing. This was a first class show and if Midas Fall ever decide to return (and I hope they do) then this is a band that simply cannot be ignored.
The experience was similar to stepping into a cold shower after a blistering hot day in the sun. Invigorating, awakening and incredible.
