Usually when a show comes to The Grundy there are no strings attached, not this time.ย Puppet Show which open this Saturday 12 April (2-4pm) is a magical mix of marionette mayhem!
Over a dozen artists and puppet practitioners have come together to create Puppet Show, a heady mix of styles and formats. Stringed bodies are abound as The Grundy is transformed into a micro state for the varied explorations of how the avatistic nature of puppets can tell a story, or say the things that humans cannot ‘through the mouthpiece of its transient puppet population’.
Having had a sneak preview of the show, I can say it’s going to be a crowd pleaser on many levels. Children will delight in the joy of the characters on show, whilst adults will be taken on many different journeys as the often challenging content that the puppets present pushes the boundaries of a form that most people will generally think of as Thunderbirds or Muffin the Mule (or is that just my creaky old head working?).
I sat spellbound for the duration of one of the films on show as an architect mused on a dangerous world of giant mantis creatures and unfulfilled dreams. The opening day will feature artist performances and promises to be a busy one so come early for all the delights on offer.
Puppet Show runs 12 April to 31 May.ย There are several workshops to coincide with the show which altblackpool will be covering so keep an eye out, but do ask for details at The Grundy as they will be booked up fast!
