Do you have a dazzling ambition to shine? Long to see your name in lights? Then the Friends of Blackpool Illuminations could provide your lightbulb moment.
As part of a new fundraising scheme, the Friends have launched the “Buy a Bulb” campaign, which will allow people to buy the chance to be part of the famous display for just a quid.
All people have to do is “Buy a Bulb” from the Friends of Blackpool Illuminations team for £1 and sign it with an indelible pen. The bulb will then be used within the display, giving the buyer their very own place in the 2014 show.
The Buy a Bulb plan has been launched as fundraising begins in earnest for the 2014 display with a team of new illuminations ambassadors joining the campaign to make the show the best ever.
Shirley Hunt, from the Friends of Blackpool Illuminations, hopes the campaign will be a huge success. She said: “This is a unique opportunity for people to become involved in Blackpool Illuminations for just £1.
“It’s a unique concept that builds on the success of last year’s fundraising efforts and draws inspiration from ‘Buy a Brick’ campaigns which are often so successful in helping new buildings to be created.
“There are more than a million bulbs used in the Illuminations display each year so people will have a job finding their name. I will be hugely impressed if anyone does but it might be fun trying!”
This is a great idea by the Friends of Blackpool Illuminations who, as ever, are providing dedicated support to the display. They really are a credit to the town and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
“I would urge people to get on board with the idea and sign up to support Blackpool and the Illuminations display.”
Bulbs can be bought from Blackpool’s Tourist Information Centre as well as the Lightworks Illuminations depot on Blackpool Business Park but will soon be available at venues across town.
The announcement of the new fundraising scheme comes just a week after it was announced this year’s Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On will return to being a free event. Rock FM, part of the Bauer Media Group which boasts more than 80 radio stations and magazines across the UK, will broadcast and help to promote the event, with Bauer also promoting the show across their network.
The acts performing at the Switch-On concert will be announced over the next few weeks. To register for Switch-On 2014 updates go to www.visitblackpool.com/switchon
