Preview: Eternal Love at The Grand Theatre

Passion, romance, secrecy and the thrill of forbidden love, if you’re looking for a bit of culture that will set your heart ablaze then definitely book some tickets to see Eternal Love coming to the Grand Theatre in March.

Based on true events in 12th Century Paris, the play tells the tale of Abelard, a famous philosopher and theologian, and his student, Heloise, who become entangled in a spiritual, intellectual and passionate relationship that neither could deny. The tale is a whirlwind romance and a devastating tragedy at the same time as most iconic love affairs seem to be.

Eternal Love, or In Extremis as it was formerly called, is written by Howard Brenton, one of Britain’s most controversial playwrights, and is brought to you by the English Touring Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Playing the lead as Pierre Abelard is David Sturzaker, famous for his role in the TV show Doctors. Taking the role of the beautiful Héloïse d’Argenteuil will be Jo Herbert who made her most recent appearance in Holby City.

The story has inspired hearts as famous as Josephine Bonaparte, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was so moved by their story that she ordered that the remains of Abelard and Heloise be entombed together at Pére Lachaise cemetery in Paris. To this day, lovers from all over the world visit the tomb where the remains of Heloise and Abelard rest eternally together.

Don’t worry if you’re not up to scratch on your Old English as this production sets the scene in a purely contemporary way yet still retaining all the magic and wonder of the past with an array of scenery, costumes and live music. If you’re a fan of Baz Luhrman’s take on Romeo and Juliet then this play is right up your street and if still in doubt check out the movie adaptation, Stealing Heaven, to give you a better idea.

Eternal Love runs from Tuesday 11 March until Saturday 15 March and tickets are only £20 for adults for this passionate affair and can be bought from the website or in person at the Church Street box office.  Tickets are also available for children and full time students at a reduced price but I would recommend this one for the couples and romance seekers.
