The Dancer and the Devil at The Winter Gardens for Showzam!

The Dancer and the Devil at The Winter Gardens for Showzam!

"Welcome to the Lounge Limbo," Rogue Theatre's flyer for The Dancer and the Devil begins. It's a "secret bar, a nightclub hidden in the forest," where those who have suffered loss or had to run from the past go. In a mixture of cabaret, theatre and dance we were presented with their stories. There was Cupcakes, the murdering master-baker - despite which she had to be admired with a theme song entitled Creme Brulee - and a marvellously macabre telling of her tale with a mixing bow.  She was played by Becky Bordeaux who's been a clown, a mermaid and…

Kevin Malone and Ellamarie Thornhill at Caffe Dolce

The latest exhibition to showcase artistic talent at Caffe Dolce on Abingdon Street is now on. All the works are in the public areas of the coffee shop so why not have a drink and spend a few minutes looking round? This month features the work of two very different artists. On the ground floor are images by photographer Kevin Malone. His work consists of a number of colour prints following the adventures of a little man seemingly constructed from Amazon-style cardboard delivery boxes. This is the first illusion; the 'little man' is in fact just that, being around three…

Interview: Zoe Lamond, Winner of Grand Words 2012

Recently I spoke with Zoe Lamond, from Blackpool, who is this year's winner of Grand Words. This one act playwriting competition for people in North West England has been running for several years now and is associated with the Grand Theatre Blackpool. I asked her: David Riley: How long have you been writing? Zoe Lamond: I have been writing for about eight years now. I loved to invent stories as a child but hadn’t done any creative writing as an adult until I turned forty. My childhood stories were full of adventure and heroic deeds - probably inspired by Enid…

Review: Among Dark Trees, A Clearing.

Let's start at the end, a la Martin Amis. Go and see this exhibition, it will make you think about big questions. Isn't that what art should do? If you'd like more than this endorsement I'd like you to read on and I'll give you an idea of what you can expect. Otherwise, just go - you won't be disappointed. As the guide to the ehibition says, it's an "exploration of...suffering, loss and hope." In the compass of our small but perfectly formed Grundy, these issues are explored through video, drawing, sound responsive lights and other material created by children…

Preview: Amongst Dark Trees, A Clearing

The Grundy Art Gallery's annual communities and schools exhibition has this year invited artist, Kai-Oi Jay Yung to create Amongst Dark Trees, A Clearing. This new commission includes a series of videos, drawings, a sound responsive light installation and hand-sewn crafted works created through Yung's engagement with schools, communities and the wider public, including those locally in Blackpool. Stories of an excessive compulsive ex-hoarder, a meditation savant, an antagonistic stand up comedian and insights from trauma psychologists are reframed into four video narratives. The gallery is interspersed with intimate personal tasks which ask the viewer to manipulate sound-light works with their…

Best of 2012: Wordpool 2012

Best of 2012: Wordpool 2012

Wordpool has been running as Blackpool's festival of words for seven years. It incorporates all activities to do with the written word for all ages and is an event (in a tourist town) with the local very much in mind. I asked Lynne Pattinson, Arts Officer at Blackpool Council, some questions about Wordpool overall and this year's events in particular. About its local focus, she said: We feel that as Wordpool celebrates words we have a flexible focus for the festival. This allows us to make our events more accessible to those who would not usually attend literature festivals. We…

Group: Stage Write

Stage Write is meeting again. If you're interested in writing, performance or criticism this should be good news for you. Stage Write was formed a couple of years ago with the idea of bringing together those interested in such things to read new works, especially those aimed at theatre, radio, TV and film.  It met initially in FYCreatives on Blackpool's Church Street where its founder, Ian Lamond (former education officer of the Grand Theatre) had a lot of support from the local council. From the start it attracted a range of male and female writers and performers with a variety…

Here's an insight into the life and work of Linda Patterson Hoey who will be taking part in the Christmas exhibition at Caffe Dolce, opening with a preview at 6pm this Thursday 6th of December (tonight!). David Riley: When did you start as an artist? Linda Patterson Hoey: I spent 4 years at Art College when I left school and have worked full time as a graphic designer for the past 25 years. It is only in the last year that I have been building my own portfolio as work and family commitments have allowed. DR: What sort of work…
