Dreamland at the Grundy

Dreamland at the Grundy

If you have ever used the word ego to describe a characteristic of someone, you have been influenced by one of the most important thinkers of all time - Sigmund Freud. He revolutionised our view of the workings of the mind. Less well known are his visits to many places as he was developing his theories - one of these included Blackpool in 1908. These visits are the starting point for artist Zoe Beloff's Dreamland: The Coney Island Amateur Psychoanalytic Society and the Blackpool Chapter. The show is now on at the Grundy gallery and is well worth a visit.…

She is most famous for the series in the crime genre centred on forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway. The fifth in this series, Dying Fall, takes the protagonists away from their usual setting in Norfolk to visit us on the Fylde Coast. She told many tales of interest to those wanting more background to her own work as well as writers of all genres. Yes, her research was thorough - even including a ride on the Big One at the Pleasure…

Fertility Orbit of the Boob Meteorite

Fertility Orbit of the Boob Meteorite

As the Grundy says, "In Aping the Beast, London-based British artist Serena Korda uses the staging of animal symbolism and folklore to explore questions of mimicry, spectacle, ritual and humour. The central work in the exhibition is a giant 15ft tall latex puppet dinosaur, created by Korda, recalling early B-movie horror films such as Godzilla or The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms." It does this with some success and a beguiling amateurism of appearance, typical of many of the monsters in films of this sort. While the sculpture remains static for the most part it is designed to move with the…

Rising Damp at Blackpool Grand Theatre

Rising Damp at Blackpool Grand Theatre

Rising Damp. which appeared at the Grand, is the stage adaptatiom of the successful ITV sitcom broadcast between 1974 and 1978. The set was cleverly constructed, showing two rooms of a bedsit with the bedroom wall cut away so the audience could follow the action. As the printed programme for the production indicated, the claustrophobic atmosphere of the TV original, mostly set in Rigsby's less than salubrious guest house with four occupants, was carried off by the strength of the original cast. The stage version does try to imitate those main characters but in doing so ran up against some…
