If you were wondering what to do for fun this weekend, we think we might have found the answer. As a cinematic musical, Sister Act (1992) is frequently screened on TV, such is the popular appeal of its energetic narrative and soundtrack which combines 60s pop hits with funky remixes of traditional choral pieces.  Songs such as My Guy (My God), I Will Follow Him, and the particularly peppy Oh Maria help give the film its heart-warming, feel good factor. Only 35 companies nationwide have been chosen to perform this staging of Sister Act in the UK.  The fact that…

Dance Partners at The Grand

Dance Partners at The Grand

The Grand Theatre was the venue for this outstanding performance of contemporary dance on 18 March. The performers featured were, The Thomas Noone Dance Company, Company Chameleon and Norrdans. Sadly, they performed to a small audience, but, as contemporary dance has appeal to a limited audience this was probably to be expected. The first half of the show opened with the raw and dynamic Brutal Love Poems from the Thomas Noone Dance Company.  This abstract, non-narrative work was of a slower pace and featured a variety of music , from a sound similar to a bow being dragged across a…

Review: The Taming of the Shrew

This excellent adaptation of the somewhat lesser known play, performed by The Royal Shakespeare Company at The Grand Theatre, is primarily aimed at school audiences. But in reality it was an amazing performance, by talented actors, which appealed to all age groups. This play within a play depicts a group of actors who find an old house. In one of the rooms they find trunks of clothing from various eras and wear them during the enactment of a play which tells the timeless story of troubled, melancholic but ultimately joyful love. This contrasts quite strongly with the tale of abuse…

Review: Meet the Hogwallops

Last night, as part of the ever popular Showzam! season, the world premier of Meet the Hogwallops took place at The Grand Theatre.  The show has been promoted as family entertainment and it certainly provided this.  If I had to sum the experience up in one word, it would be: different.  A sprinkling of flour, a strewing of laundry, a birthday theme, family photo poses, a top secret box, a zimmer frame, some bananas and good old fashioned slapstick interspersed with circus skills would paint a clearer picture of the events of the evening. The opening scene showed a stage…

Review: Big Diwali Party 2013

Review: Big Diwali Party 2013

Wow! Where do I begin to describe this amazing event!  It was a cold and blustery night as I walked up Church Street, but inside the atmosphere was as warm as toast. The event started at 6.30pm in The Winter Gardens' stunning Spanish Hall. After finding our table,  which was decorated with a beautiful, intricately decorated Indian lantern, candles and ‘sparkles’, we were provided with complimentary soft drinks and chocolates which had been left on each table; a nice touch.  The relaxing, evocative background music was at just the right volume and set the mood for the evening perfectly. As…

This glittering celebration of authentic Indian culture, food and live entertainment takes place on Saturday 2 November at The Winter Gardens. The Big Diwali Party is hosted by Nritya Sangam in the beautiful Spanish Hall and The Windsor Suite. Diwali is celebrated by Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities across the world. Also known as the Festival of Lights, translated it means a row of lamps and these burn in homes throughout the night and represent good over evil and light against darkness. This year’s celebration at The Winter Gardens begins at 6.30pm and goes on until 1.00am. It’s family friendly…

Review: Dotty Delightful’s Handmade, Vintage and Music Fair

This truly delightful event took place at the Winter Gardens on 12th and 13th October. Many craft fares seem to have the same tired old stalls displaying badly made tat. Not this one! High quality abounded among the eclectic mix of stalls. There were too many stalls to mention each individually, so I have tried to mention those which stood out from the rest for me. On entering the hall, I noticed a fantastic memorabilia stall displaying colourful water crystals, 3D pictures and, my favourite, retro prints. My attention was then caught by The Cheese Shop at Botany Bay which…
