Exhibition: New Langdale Photographers

Exhibition: New Langdale Photographers

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The portrayal of Blackpool's tower, illuminations, and piers is well documented. But what do we discover if we explore a place set back from the prom? Along with a group of photographers who assemble every week at a community centre in Hawes Side, I have discovered how Blackpool could be seen in an alternative way. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]What do we think about, when we think about creativity? Is it useful, what does it communicate? As children, perhaps the first things we do could be described as creative, dancing as a way to move and mark making to learn to write. Using…

Exhibition: Emilia Zogo – Blackpool in black & white

The exhibition may be titled Blackpool in Black and White but Emilia Logo has in fact photographed a number of other places to assemble this very fine solo photographic exhibition currently on show at Tea Amantes, Albert Road, Blackpool. The room was quite full on my arrival and got busier through the evening. Enlarged and framed to a good size, these photographs are perfectly composed and grab attention straight away. Some were of the now closed Bonny Street market, being dismantled at the time of writing and are therefore now a historical record. More images were presented on a video…

‘Stagefright’ – Dawn Mander’s exhibition wows at Tea Amantes venue

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Once more on the service 3 bus to Tea Amantes to view local hero snapper, Dawn Mander’s, excellent street photography based exhibition. On my arrival the place was already buzzing, full of the great and good of Blackpool creative society and others from as far afield as Leeds and Bedford. It was rather bizarre to see photographers taking photographs of photographs (including me), but so it was. Dawn seems to have a reputation for keeping out of the limelight, but with this quality of work, the question is why? She says of her photographs:[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1659864185019{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-bottom:…

Story Trails Made us See Blackpool Differently

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] When you visit Central Library in Blackpool you expect to step into different worlds through the medium of books. Last weekend it was more ‘if you go into the library today, you’re sure of a big surprise!’ as audiences entered the worlds of Virtual Reality (VR) and interactive Augmented Reality (AR). Story Trails is the UK’s largest immersive storytelling project and brings together the past, present and future using the latest technology. Through immersive cinema experience, 3D maps of Blackpool or a VR headset bringing to life BFI & BBC archives, there was much to choose from. Throughout the…

Ensuites Available: Fancy fonts on the seafront

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] When Sarah Horn began photographing hotel frontages in Blackpool, little did she know that her collection would result in a unique archive of coastal architecture, vernacular typography and unconscious poetry. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Sarah has made a mission of photographing the B&Bs and independent hotels of Blackpool. The results of her efforts have now been published in En-Suites Available. The title is an affectionate nod to the fact that rooms with their own bathrooms are seen as a selling point, when it might be expected they’d be standard in a hotel stay in the twenty first century.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]Other than an index of…

Just a walk down the prom with my camera

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Just a walk down the prom with my film camera, in the sun taking in the crisp cool air. Here are some of David's favourite black and white, medium format photos from that day. A lovely little trip and break. Come back nice weather and we can do this again. One Saturday I decided to take a trip to Fleetwood Market to buy some things from the art supply store that's opened up there. A good day in itself. I returned with a new sketchbook, which I admit I'm yet to try out, sweeties, a new kitchen knife, a…

Portraits of The RNLI with photographer Richard Oughton

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Volunteers are at the heart of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution making up 95% of the organisation.  Earlier in the year photographer Richard Oughton captured a series of striking portraits of Fylde Coast volunteers which also successfully raised money for this essential charity. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The RNLI is a registered charity run by volunteers to save lives at sea, a key service in Blackpool with our expanse of promenade and ocean. The Royal National Lifeboat Association was founded in 1824 as The Royal Institute for the Preservation of Lives and Property. Since 1824 the RNLI has saved 143,000 lives as…

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Casey Orr is a photographic artist based in The North of England. Her beguiling photography straddles a number of themes with her website spanning images of community, bicycles, huge bonfires, and (my favourite) anarchists. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Her photography practice includes people, documentary, and performance and she describes her work as an exploration into the lives of women, interconnectedness of living things, and our relationship to nature as well as home and belonging. An American-born artist living in Yorkshire, her collaborations have included work on the exterior walls of HMP Leeds prison as well as being featured at a variety of photography…
