#regram• @storytellers.inc Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by @bessbellkalb is the kind of book that fills me with excitement and creative inspiration at the same time it gently admonishes me for not trying harder in my own writing. It's a bit like a voicemail from Bobby herself. Like, what are you doing if you aren't writing books as good as this? And, when will you grow up and start being fabulous.

It's a memoir in the best sort of way - acknowledging that it's an act of storytelling, and can fall into fabrication when that fits best because that's how we pass our stories down anyway. Not just because both are parental, but I'd say this is a great companion read to (the truly astonishing Priestdaddy by my fav Patricia Lockwood) because it injects so much Spirit into the act of writing, probably it's osmosis from the people it describes, but in itself - the writing is a way to honour these beloved people who cannot be contained in an ordinary memoir; they simply demand more. Oh to be as characterful as to warrant a legacy as beautiful as a book like this.

Kalb conjures grandmother-as-mother, as wife as the Great-Grandmother that she would have been if death hadn't inconvenienced her. Grandmothering her way through the book; interrupting her own history to question the writer's choice of clothes, boyfriend, career; you can *hear* the raised eyebrow down the phone. Magical.

I want to press this book into the hands and letterboxes of all my friends, not because some of them are mothers, have grandmothers or love memoirs - but because it's a great book, and I want to talk about it some more. That part where. Didn't you cry and laugh? Wasn't it just?
Yes, yes, it was.

I can't lend you my copy because I'm keeping it. I hope I'll read it again someday when I feel like I want to be reminded that something as familiar as writing about your own family can be told slant. Work harder. Look sideways. Re-imagine the form.
Get a cab. Take afternoon tea at a fancy hotel. Wear lipstick. Pick up the phone and tell someone you love them.
Read the book. Write the book.

Abstracted Movements brings together a selection of Blackpool based artists; Rachel Coultrop, Candice Swallow, Connor Gavin & Stacey Foster from the pARTnership whose work explores abstraction.

Expressing experience through movement and materials, all four artists document their artistic responses with carefully chosen palettes of colour, form and meditative mark making. Gentle, considered marks sit alongside intense gestural layers of bold colour presenting a view of the world that isn’t conveyed through vision or speech.

@thepartnership is an @aceagrams funded, 12-month pilot project in Blackpool being delivered by @grundyartgallery in collaboration with The New Langdale in Blackpool, @venturearts_ _ in Manchester and Abingdon Studio artist @tinadempseyartist
