Grand Words is a one act play writing competition run in conjunction with The Grand Theatre for people in the north west of England. It has run at the Grand since 2009 and is about to launch its search for plays for 2014. The launch will be marked by a variety of readings of work from last year’s competition, including the winning entry, The Agios Dionysios Writers’ Circle, a comedy drama by Theresa Stoker of Lancaster (featured image shows her receiving her award from 2013 winner, Zoe Lamond). It will be accompanied by a short work, The Tale of Two Brothers, by Denise Silcock from Bolton which is based on a true episode in a mining town in Lancashire in the early part of the twentieth century. Finally, the group We Are Improv will be coming from Lancaster to do the work of Tom Meaney in his surreal play, When Herbert Came Home.
The event takes place at the Grand Studio on May 17 at 7-30pm. Tickets, from The Grand Theatre box office (01253 290190), are £4.50. Entry forms for this year’s competition will be available on the day and entries accepted until late August. Full details will be on the form.
