Skaters at Pride

The Blackpool Roller Derby League has this week announced that its newly formed, all female team the Blackpool Roller Coasters will be playing their first public game against The Vagine Regime UK B Team. This will take place on the Sunday of the weekend of the Pride celebrations in Blackpool.

The league has come a long way since its humble beginnings 18 months ago, when a group of roller-skating fans came together in a tiny community hall in Bispham. After a short while of wobbling around on hire skates, not really knowing what they were doing, the skaters have all trained very hard to become a focused team of roller derby players. The last year and a half has been a roller coaster (excuse the pun). The league has grown quickly to accommodate over 60 co-ed skaters from all walks of life, spanning an age range of 19 to late 40’s. Some of the most dedicated and talented of these skaters now form the women’s team – The Blackpool Roller Coasters. They also now have a successful newbies program, a recreational team, lots of dedicated non-skating officials, a fantastic team of referees and they are working hard to establish their men’s team.

This game will see them battle it out on the track against the Vagine Regime UK who describe themselves as “a collective of queer derby folks from around the world.”  Today’s VRUK roster is made up from skaters from all over the country and the Roller Coasters are excited to have them all in Blackpool to celebrate Pride weekend.

Roller derby isn’t just a sport to the Roller Coaster team – it is a way of life. The impact that it has had on their skaters’ lives has been immeasurable in many ways. This life changing sport has helped to improve the fitness, health and wellbeing of members, improving confidence on and off the track as well as giving valuable volunteering experience and transferable skill building to many of the skaters. Roller derby really is a sport for everyone who has a passion for roller skating… and bright coloured socks!

The team is proud to invite friends, family and roller derby fans alike to watch them play a fast-paced, hard-hitting game. They promise you a fun-filled day.
