The organisers of Wordpool have been trying to get internationally renowned, multi-award winning psychological thriller writer Sophie Hannah to come along for years. And 2014 is the year that wish came true – anyone who was at the Central Library to witness it will be talking about the event for weeks to come.
Speaking without notes and with plenty of humour, Sophie is a born raconteur and the poet turned crime writer held the audience in the palm of her hand as she related the stories behind her stories – or the ‘gossip’ as she termed it. She is a writer who relies very much on real life for her ideas – and Sophie revealed that many of her own experiences have been translated into fiction.
From clingy, psychotic fellow airline passengers to acquaintances looking to offload their children onto a stranger in the event of their death, the snippets of tales from a, frankly, quite dramatic life have found their way into the pages of her best selling novels.
Next to come is a brand-new Hercule Poirot book, and self-confessed Agatha Christie addict Hannah was thrilled to be asked to write it. She gave us some insider morsels to whet the appetite before it is published in September. Sophie revealed that is set in 1929 and that there are times, as the plot thickens, when the famous Belgian detective looks to be flummoxed. But we all know that Poirot’s little grey cells will not be defeated and I’m sure everyone who was at the Wordpool event will now be marking the publication date in their diaries.
Another great Wordpool event – and this is only day two!
