Aunty Social’s knitting group, Knittaz With Attitude, have been attempting to Keep Blackpool Toasty for the past 3 years. This month they are asking for your help in their latest installment of knitting workshops.
Their first venture into the world of knitted graffiti, or ‘yarnbombing’, saw them support the local Sand, Sea & Spray graffiti festival by making some jumpers for the lamp posts in St. John’s Square. Residents and visitors alike seemed to approve of the efforts to brighten up the town centre and many stopped to take and pose for pictures. Aunty Social are very interested in engaging new audiences, with what some may consider to be old art forms. They believe that they achieved this through this project and, since its success, have strived to create more alternative ways of increasing participation in the arts.
The following Christmas saw them move on to more unusual creations, as they produced two large-scale knitted and crocheted reindeer. They were originally on display within the Winter Gardens box office and have now found pride of place in Charabanc (Aunty Social’s town centre shop, which provides a high street location, where local designers and makers can sell their wares).
This Summer sees the development of a Yarnbombing Trail (supported by LeftCoast) and KWA hope to create several large knitted/crocheted animal sculptures that will be displayed throughout Blackpool. Over the next couple of weeks, KWA are offering you the chance to get involved in helping to be a part of this, free of charge. You don’t need to be an expert crafter and the sessions are open to people of all ages and abilities.
The workshops are running between Thursday 17 July and Tuesday 29 July. Please see the Facebook event page for further information on workshop dates and locations and you too can help to Keep Blackpool Toasty!
