Peter Kay turns on over a million (lightbulbs)

It’s that exciting time of year when we count down to holidays in number of sleeps, the kids are breaking up from school and we all should know better than to attempt to drive down the promenade during the day time.  Summer is upon us and the unseasonably good weather brings with it the line up announcement for the switch-on of our 102nd year of the world famous Illuminations. It surely also brings nervous excitement in the hope that last year’s much criticised ‘celebrations’ will be forgotten.

Visit Blackpool were pleased to announce that comedian, and Blackpool favourite, Peter Kay, will be flicking the famous switch and lighting up Blackpool’s promenade light show which attracts over four million visitors to our humble seaside town.  Peter Kay is Britain’s best loved comedian and proper northern. A Bolton boy and Guinness World Record holder, his career took a leap after he released his first ever stand up comedy DVD, Live at the Top of the Tower, in 2000. Peter also hosted the Royal Variety Show in Blackpool’s Opera House in 2009.  It’s only right that he returns to light up the Tower once more.

Peter Kay cleverly entertained guests at his Tour That Didn’t Tour Tour with his misheard song lyrics which makes me wonder what fun he may pick at those he shares the stage with on August 29.

Joining the show, which is presented by Rock FM, is a big scoop of well known, talented chart toppers. There will be X Factor winners Little Mix and old favourites Texas, who are back in the music world celebrating 25 years since the release of their first album. They will be joined by X factor contestants Union J, singer/songwriter and actress Pixie Lott, Neon Jungle and my current favourite George Ezra.

With such a full line up it’s bound to be a good show and will get our Illuminations season off to a great start. I can’t wait to see what new and old Illuminations have been picked for the 6 mile long route.

The fun and talent doesn’t stop there, however, as this year the FREE switch on event is part of a weekend festival which promises songs from the musicals on Saturday night and a Sunday throw back with many of the acts from The Big Reunion; Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, 911 and Damage.

The switch on event is on Friday 29 August on the Tower Headlands underneath Blackpool Tower which will be transformed in to an arena space. Registration for the Friday night switch on is now closed but tickets for the Saturday and Sunday night entertainment are still available. Alternatively, head to some good spots along the prom where you will hear the goings on and watch the whole prom light up in the capable hands of Peter Kay. Just don’t forget your waterproofs and watch out for that fine rain.

For more ticket information on the show and tickets, visit the Blackpool Tourist Information Centre, Festival House, Promenade, Blackpool, phone 01253 478225 or go to the Visit Blackpool website.
