Apply for new studios in the art of town

Abingdon Studios

The search is on for artists to fill a new studios complex in the heart of Blackpool town centre. Abingdon Studios is a creative initiative from LeftCoast and Blackpool Council, which aims to provide new and affordable studio space.

Situated above Abingdon Street Market, the space will be artist run and will encourage them to collaborate with each other and develop new work. The studios will initially host six artists – and an open space on the upper floor will be developed for exhibitions and provide opportunities for artists to share their work with the surrounding communities.

The spaces are priced between £60 and £100 per studio per month and LeftCoast are now inviting applications from interested artists.

Michael Trainor, Artistic Director of LeftCoast, said: “This is a great opportunity for artists to secure themselves a space in the centre of Blackpool. With the Grundy Art Gallery, Venn Projects, Supercollider Contemporary Art Projects and the Old Rock Factory studio space just on the doorstep, Blackpool is becoming one of the North West’s most important destinations for artists to live and work.”

Cllr Christine Wright, cabinet member for culture and heritage, said: “The LeftCoast programme is all about using Blackpool as a place where great art and great artists can prosper. Opening up some former offices to become specialist studios for artists to use is a fantastic idea and I think it will be a really sough- after location for artists to use.”
She added: “Blackpool is getting back on the map for our heritage and cultural offer – and once set up, some designated studios in the town centre will be another string to our artistic bow.”

The deadline for applications from artists is Friday, October 3 at 11.59am. To download an application form or for more information visit www.abingdonstudios.org.uk or call 01253 477973.
