Featured: Avishek Choudhury reaches prestigious Open Mic Regional Final

Singer-songwriter Avishek Choudhury from Blackpool, (who is now currently based in Barnsley at university) has made it through to a regional final of the prestigious Open Mic UK singing competition and will now be performing in one of the live showcases of the competition at the 02 Academy in Sheffield on Sunday October 12.

558321_483998785046544_1578369082_nAvishek is a well known face around the Blackpool music scene and especially known for his support of younger musicians currently coming through in the area. On his regular visits home to the Fylde, Avishek wastes no time in getting out and about with his camera shooting both still images and live video footage of local bands and posting them on his Facebook pages in recognition of their work. But as well as lending his support to others, Avishek himself is a fine musician and songwriter. So it’s no surprise really to see this highly talented young man get some much deserved recognition for his own work. To reach this prestigious final is a great endorsement of both his skill with the guitar and also the finely crafted original songs that he has penned himself.

Thousands of hopefuls entered Open Mic UK nationwide and hundreds of auditionees attended on the day for their turn to impress the judges. Those who made it through the audition stage will now take part in a live head-to-head battle alongside the best talent in their region, performing in front of hundreds of audience members and a music industry judging panel in their bid to win a place at the National Grand Final. Avishek Choudhury will be pitted against hopefuls from the South Yorkshire region and the 21 year-old Blackpool musician will no doubt be very proud to represent our area over there in South Yorkshire.

Open Mic UK 2014 is the biggest search for unsigned talent in the UK, and travels the country every year in search for the UK’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres performing either covers or their own original material. The competition is backed by Future Music, the company behind the discovery of artists such as Atlantic Record’s Jacob Banks, Warner Music’s Birdy, Sony Music’s Jaymi Hensley from Union J and Jahmene Douglas, Luke Friend and Columbia Record’s Lucy Spraggan. Over the years the competition and Future Music have discovered some of the best new talent and propelled them to the big stage, working closely with Sony, Universal, Warner and Syco. The latter stages of the competition will also provide acts with the opportunity to impress many guests from the music and entertainment industry. Previous judges for Future Music competitions included DJs that have worked for Radio 1 such as Ras Kwame, Daniel P Carter and Annie Nightingale MBE.

We would like to wish Avishek the very best of luck on October 12 and congratulate him for reaching this stage of such a renowned competition. You can follow his progress and keep up with the latest news about the competition and information on how to obtain tickets for the event at Avishek’s Facebook page, his website, Youtube channel, Souncloud and Twitter accounts.
