Local Christmas Gift Ideas: Retro Coasters by Aunty Social

In the run up to Christmas, altblackpool will be featuring the work of local artists whose creations will make cracking Christmas gifts.  As an added bonus, each group/artist has agreed to give away a fabulous example of their work to altblackpool readers.  First up we have the retro craftwork of the prolific folk at Aunty Social.

Aunty Social have produced these retro coasters using hama beads. These are craft beads that are fused together by ironing. Most parents will be familiar with them, but used to more conventional designs of animals and flowers. Aunty put their usual unique spin on craft, by making designs from 80s video game characters and iconic images from cult movies.

This would be an ideal gift for the geek-about-the-office, in need of an original coaster to prevent those nasty dark circles on their desk. Also a unique talking point for the lounge of any recycled teenager, who longs for the days of Pac-man and Mario once more!

The coasters are £3 each or £10 for a set of 4.

Aunty Social is a non-for-profit organisation which provides arts and cultural activities for the residents of Blackpool. This ranges from craft workshops and running a yarnbombing knitting group to providing large scale events in conjunction with the Winter Gardens. Any profits made from the sale of goods goes back in to providing more workshops and activities. They believe in the power of tea and cake and bringing people together over a brew.

Aunty Social are co-hosting Handmade on the Highstreet with NWBaseline on the second weekend in December, where their gifts will be on sale, alongside other local artists and creators.

Aunty also hope to be launching a pop-up shop on the weekends in the Winter Gardens complex. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for more details.

You can find out more about the group via their website www.auntysocial.co.uk, you can also like them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter: @_AuntySocial_

To be in with a chance of winning these geeky treats all you need to do is go to the altblackpool Facebook page and click like – if you already like the page then you are already in with a chance! (Competition now closed: 07/12/12)
