Young ‘Whippersnappers’ Share Their Tram Sunday Images

The Mount Pavilion, Fleetwood by Molly

This Sunday, 8th November from 2pm -5pm, The Mount Pavilion, Fleetwood, plays host to an exhibition of photographs taken by children and young people at this year’s Tram Sunday event. The young people were commissioned by LeftCoast and supported by professional photographers, Claire Griffiths and Jill Reidy. This was part of their Whippersnappers project, which aimed to give aspiring young photographers the chance to find out what it takes to get the perfect picture. The exhibition will include highlights from the day, which brings together the traditional heritage transport exhibits and now, thanks to LeftCoast, Wyre Council and Arts Council England, transport themed arts, as part of the SpareParts Arts Programme.

During the project Claire and Jill worked with five young people, teaching them about the settings and skills needed to use a camera, image composition and how to select the right images to exhibit. As a reward for their involvement each young person will receive a gift voucher as a thank you for their time.

Michael Trainor, Artistic Director of LeftCoast, said: “The Whippersnappers took some fantastic images at Tram Sunday which really captured the spirit of the day. Photography is a really accessible art form and giving these young people the chance to work alongside professional photographers is a great way to help them build their skills so maybe they can become the pros of tomorrow.”

Robert Brown, Chairman of Fleetwood Festival of Transport, added: “We’re really excited to see what the young people involved have produced. Tram Sunday is something we are incredibly passionate about and this exhibition will give everyone here in Fleetwood the opportunity to look back on the highlights of the day. Hopefully we will use them to publicise next year’s Tram Sunday and SpareParts Festival.”

Claire Griffiths added: “It has been an absolutely delight to work with these incredibly talented young people and see their enthusiasm for learning about photography. Jill and I have been really impressed with their dedication and the quality of the images they have captured and we can wait to see the images installed in The Mount for the community to see.”

As well as the exhibition Claire and Jill will also host a free photography workshop for young people on Saturday 7th November from 1-4pm at The Mount Pavilion. Numbers are limited and on a first come first served basis so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
