The brilliance of Blackpool’s popular LightPool is set to bring crowds back for second year.
The Illuminations season of 2015 saw the unveiling of a spectacular projection onto the Victorian architecture of Blackpool Tower contrasting old and new technologies. Last year’s premier of LightPool proved a winner with Blackpool’s Illuminations season by attracting visitors from far and wide, as well as local residents.
LightPool, a £2 million programme with contributions by Coastal Communities Fund, Blackpool Council, and LeftCoast will return with a vengeance in 2016. This year’s instalment bonanza of fantastic projections is promised to be even better with designs created by Illuminations curator Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen and his daughter Cecile where the artists have embraced the Tower’s architecture and considered a series of characters to bring the Tower’s frontage to life, and is aptly called ‘Enchanted Blackpool’.
Blackpool’s Illumination season will this year begin on Friday 2nd September and the lights will shine every night until Sunday 6th November. Throughout the lights season, and especially during the schools’ October half-term holiday LightPool will feature a Festival of Light for a week-long in the town centre. From 28th October, until 2nd November, a series of spectacular light installations which have been inspired by Blackpool’s heritage and history, and people from the resort will be taking place throughout the town centre. As well as installations, live shows of art and fire from home grown UK acts and also from abroad will perform.
‘The Macula’, a Czech company who are world leaders in projection mapping will continue their success from across Europe with a specialist film designed for Blackpool, called ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’. The gist of this film is that of an astronaut exploring new worlds, which in the rise of Tim Peake’s successful mission to the International Space Station this year should tie in nicely and be a hit all round with adults and children alike. Alongside the ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ projection and after ‘The Macula’ working closely alongside the European Space Agency, another treat is in store to take you on a journey of a lifetime with projection perfection.
And the best bit is that all three films which will be shown several times each evening from the Comedy Carpet are totally FREE. How great is this. This free-for-all is a spectacle you should make an effort to view, come rain or shine.
Councillor Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, has said, “Last year’s LightPool events were a big hit, with people coming from across the country to watch the stunning projection shows and the spectacular performances in the town centre”.
She goes on to say, “We are working with experts from all over the world to make LightPool a visual feast for families, as well as making sure it is all free to enjoy”.
Back also again for this year’s LightPool, will be the ambassadors ready to assist and help with any LightPool information.
Coinciding with the Illuminations, and beginning on Friday 9th September the World Championship Fireworks Display will feature for four consecutive weeks.

Hi, you mention there are 3 new projections but I can’t see mention of the third.
‘Chasing Stars’, features Tim Peake as the narrator has a soundtrack with music by Vangelis. This was created by The Projection Studio.
Thanks.
